Plant Breeding and Research
Whoever wants to endeavour into plant breeding; has to anticipate future demands of agriculture, of consumers and of the economy a long time ahead. It can easily take more than ten years to develop a new variety from the first crossing to the marketable product.
The starting point of plant breeding is plant genetics. In a long and difficult selection process plant breeders arrive at a new combination of genes or succeed in enhancing the genetic basis of a crop. This ensures high crop performance in a changing environment and in different locations.
