Genetic engineering is one branch of modern biotechnology. It enables the breeder to precisely transfer a selected gene to a crop plant and thus give it valuable properties. Since this transfer can be done across the borders of different species, it enables the breeders to make better use of biological diversity in agriculture. When looking for a new property, the breeder is no longer restricted to the limited pool of genetic possibilities of the same plant species, but can also use genes of other plant species or bacteria.
