The properties of our crops are determined by their genetics. Genomic Research gives us a deeper insight into the inheritance of genes. The results of genomic research enable an understanding of the plant as a biological system and of its interaction with the environment at molecular level.

Genomic research is a universal tool of modern breeding methods. Comprehensive studies of genes of individual species have been carried out to describe their functions and to decipher the genetic differences and their expression in different individuals of the same species. Once these differences are known, molecular markers can be developed as diagnostic tools. These markers enable the breeder to detect even very small genetic differences and to correlate them with the plant properties - an important technique used in Smart Breeding. The discoveries of genomic research also can be used to create genetically enhanced plants (Genetic Engineering).
