CropsIn thousands of years, the systematic work of plant breeders has been improving crops. Crops are plant species cultivated by man. Agriculture and horticulture benefit from improved varieties and premium seeds. Today, farmers in Germany are cultivating approximately 25 different food crops and some 35 fodder crops, not included the approximately 70 vegetable crops. Modern varieties of these crops are mostly used, since they ensure environment-friendly cultivation and high yields. Farmers can choose from a rich selection of more than 2,600 agricultural varieties listed in Germany and from several thousand additional varieties listed in the EU, while vegetable growers can choose from a selection of more than 17,500 vegetable varieties listed in the EU. Ornamental plants, too, have continuously been improved by plant breeders, and gardeners and consumers enjoy a rich choice of new varieties. ![]() Source: University of Hohenheim, Institute for Plant Breeding, Seed Research and Population Genetics Please click here (PDF, 14.03 KB) for an explanation of the different seed samples. | Downloads Downloadable brochures and flyers Vacancies Find your future in plant breeding Itinerary How to reach us PDF-documents can be viewed with Acrobat Reader, which is available for free from Adobe. | |
