Seed Multiplication

Quality seeds and need to be produced in adequate quantities in order to ensure a sufficient and timely supply of the registered varieties to the German farmers. The plant breeders normally co-operate with selected seed multipliers that are to produce the pre-basic and the basic seeds needed for the subsequent multiplication. Seed multiplication is organised by special sub-contractors, the multiplication organisation (MO) or the multiplication and distribution (MD) companies. On the basis of an analysis of the demand for seeds in their respective area, the MO companies organize the production of seeds of varieties best adapted to the local conditions. They work with selected multipliers to ensure the necessary diligence in the production of seeds under the Seed Marketing Law.
