Seed Certification

Seed certification is a statutory quality control for seeds. Only high quality seeds can be certified and may be placed on the market. The quality standards are defined in the German Seed Marketing Law and in various regulations on seeds. For all crops except vegetables, the quality assessment starts with an inspection of the crop growing on the field. This field inspection makes sure that the multiplication field plot has been adequately prepared and treated. Stringent quality criteria also apply to off-types and phytosanitary condition. In a second step, the seed itself is tested. This seed testing examines germination, off-types and purity. Only seeds that comply with the high quality standards will pass the examination and will be certified. Only certified seed may be placed on the market.
